It is important to know that getting treatment during a crisis can help to improve their mental state and even possibly save their life.
In many cases, the individual experiencing a mental health crisis may not be aware that there is any sort of problem. This is especially true when people are experiencing hallucinations or psychosis. They may not have the ability to recognize that what they are experiencing is not based in reality.
What Does a Mental Health Crisis Look Like?
Some signs can be stating things are there that clearly are not, or being paranoid about events that may occur that are nearly impossible. It is important to take some time to evaluate their behavior so that you can determine whether or not it is time to seek help for them. Remember that they may become agitated or unwillingly to get the help that they need, but you are doing so with their best interests in mind.
Another sign could be that the individual is exhibiting erratic behavior that is not typical for them. Some people can be more prone towards making poor decisions, but if someone you know is suddenly taking actions that are outside of their normal behavior, they may be in a state of crisis. A means of determining the root of the problem could be to attempt to have a conversation with them about your concerns. The level of rational discussion they can have could signal how serious the situation is.
If they clearly are not able to convey why they are behaving in such a manner, or do not see that they are taking serious risks, it may be time to talk them into getting treatment during a crisis possibly affecting their mental health.
How to Help During a Mental Health Crisis
If there is any behavior that leads you to believe that the individual may be at risk of causing harm to themselves or someone else, you must take action immediately. While they may not like that you are contacting authorities in the moment, that should not be of concern to you. In the end, the vast majority are pleased that someone cared enough to take action on their behalf.
When an individual gets into a certain mental state, whether it be depression or another mental health condition, they may no longer have the ability to think clearly. By getting them the help they need you are being their advocate and showing your true concern for them and others.
It can be difficult to determine if it is time to seek treatment, especially for someone dealing with a mental health crisis. It is important to remain calm and evaluate the situation. If you believe that there is reason for concern, there probably is. Taking action and being wrong is far better than not taking action and it leading to a far worse situation.
